Latvia for summer: Latgale and the Latvian Baltic Coast
The Baltic States - Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia - are often associated by the older Polish generation with an uninspiring image of former Soviet republics. Despite their proximity, only Lithuania's Vilnius and its surroundings, and Riga in Latvia, enjoy popularity among Polish tourists. When heading north, the usual destination is Scandinavia with Finland, and even cycling travelers en route to Nordkapp seldom deviate from the main road corridor around the Baltic Sea. Contrary to these trends, I spent a week getting to know friendly Latvia, which this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of its independence. Latvia left me with memories of a country that is culturally and historically interesting, well-maintained, full of lush nature, and inhabited by friendly people.
