Via Claudia Augusta and 7 other scenic cycling routes in the Alps

Via Claudia Augusta is one of Europe's oldest long-distance routes, following the course of a Roman road that once connected the Danube region with northern Italy. Today, the route runs from southern Germany through Austria to Italy, linking river valleys, Alpine passes and historic towns along the way. Its character is defined by cultural continuity rather than uniform infrastructure, with sections varying in terrain, surface and elevation. This diversity makes the route especially appealing to cyclists interested in history and landscape as much as in riding itself.

Via Claudia Augusta across the Alps

Along the way, the Via Claudia Augusta route passes through regions such as Bavaria, Tyrol and South Tyrol, combining wide valley cycling with more demanding Alpine sections. Roman milestones, medieval towns and historic bridges provide constant reminders of the route's origins. While some stretches follow quiet cycle paths, others use secondary roads or gravel tracks, requiring a bit more planning and flexibility. The reward is a strong sense of travelling through layers of European history embedded in the landscape.

Via Claudia Augusta

At the same time, Via Claudia Augusta is not the only attractive option for cycling in the Alps. The region offers many other scenic routes that combine dramatic mountain landscapes with well-developed cycling infrastructure. Depending on preferences, cyclists can choose flatter valley routes, lake-based loops or more challenging Alpine crossings. Together, these alternatives show that the Alps provide a wide range of high-quality cycling experiences beyond this historic Roman road.

Alpe-Adria Bicycle Route (Ciclovia Alpe-Adria) - Austria & Italy

Near Salzburg, the Alpe-Adria Cycle Route starts in wide Alpine valleys beneath limestone massifs and gradually leads cyclists south through long mountain corridors. A key section follows a former railway line, using tunnels and galleries to avoid steep climbs and ensure a smooth passage through rugged terrain. In this respect, it differs from routes such as Via Claudia Augusta, which rely more on historic roads and natural passes. Further south, the route descends into Italy, where the mountains open into the milder landscapes of Friuli.

Lakes Route (Seen-Route) - Switzerland

Leaving the shores of Lake Constance, the Lakes Route quickly enters the northern foothills, where gentle ridges mark the gradual transition toward the Swiss Prealps. As elevation increases, open meadows and farm terraces provide wide views across successive mountain ranges, with short climbs leading into a clearly prealpine landscape. Unlike historic crossings such as Via Claudia Augusta, which follow ancient transit corridors, this route emphasises a continuous sequence of lakes and changing elevations, before descending toward Lake Geneva and the softer landscapes of the western prealpine zone.

Rhine Cycle Route (Rhein-Route) - Switzerland

High above Andermatt, the Swiss section of the Rhine Cycle Route begins near the Oberalp Pass, close to the river’s source in the Lepontine Alps. Descending into Surselva, the route follows the Vorderrhein through steep slopes before entering the Ruinaulta Gorge, one of the most striking landscapes shaped by the young Rhine. Reaching Lake Constance, the route leaves the Alpine environment behind and continues through a noticeably softer, open landscape, offering a very different rhythm from historic transalpine routes such as Via Claudia Augusta.

North-South Route (Nord-Süd-Route) - Switzerland

Starting near Lugano, the North–South Route climbs out of the warm, Italian-speaking region of Ticino and enters the narrow upper valleys along the southern slopes of the Alps. The ascent toward the Gotthard reaches its high point on the historic Tremola Road, where a long series of switchbacks crosses rugged mountain terrain. In contrast to Via Claudia Augusta, which follows broader valleys and lower passes, this route embraces a more dramatic high-alpine crossing. North of the pass, the route descends into wider valleys and continues across the Swiss Plateau on gentler terrain.

Carinthian Lake Loop (Kärnten Seen-Schleife) - Austria

Starting near the southern edge of Carinthia, the Carinthian Lake Loop runs through a landscape framed by the Karawanks and the Gailtal Alps, where steep ridges rise directly above the lakes. As the route turns north, the alpine backdrop gradually retreats, opening into the gentler forms of the Nockberge and the wide basins around Villach and Klagenfurt. This shift from high mountains to prealpine terrain mirrors patterns known from historic routes such as Via Claudia Augusta, where landscape transitions play a key role in the riding experience.

Aare Cycle Route (Aare-Route) - Switzerland

The Aare Cycle Route starts high at the Grimsel Pass, where glacial lakes and granite slopes define the upper Bernese Alps. As the river descends, the route moves through the Aare Gorge and continues along Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, with wide views toward the peaks above Interlaken. This clear transition from high alpine terrain to gentler landscapes recalls the landscape logic known from historic routes such as Via Claudia Augusta, where changing natural zones shape the journey. Beyond Bern, the scenery opens into the Three-Lakes Region.

Cycling Vorarlberg - Austria

From the rolling hills of the Bregenz Forest, cycling in Vorarlberg leads gradually upward toward the higher basins around Lech am Arlberg and the entrance to the Klostertal. Farther south, the landscape becomes more compact and steeper as the route enters the Montafon, where traditional villages lie beneath broad alpine ridges. This gradual progression through distinct landscape zones reflects a spatial logic also found on historic routes such as Via Claudia Augusta, where changes in relief define the rhythm of the journey.
