Hessen Railway Cycle Route: the German land of extinct volcanoes

Unused railway lines are eagerly repurposed by many regions in Europe for new cycling routes. Germany leads in transforming former railway infrastructure, boasting over 5500 kilometers of rail-to-trail bike paths. To witness how Germany turns abandoned 'iron roads' into leisure spaces, we embarked on the BahnRadweg Hessen - Hessen Railway Cycle Route, the longest rail-to-trail route in Germany. An added highlight of our journey was traversing Central Europe's largest post-volcanic landscape, a unique backdrop to our rail route adventure.
