Bicycle bridges in Europe. 18 stunning routes, 18 unique crossings [2025]
Bridges are much more than just a way to cross from one side of the river to the other. They are often highlights of any cycling adventure. These structures add variety to routes, offering a unique blend of architecture, history and natural beauty. Many bridges become perfect spots to take a break, soak in stunning views or even explore a bit of the local heritage. Whether perched over serene rivers, nestled within lush landscapes or spanning urban skylines, cycling bridges bring an extra layer of excitement to any journey.
Among the bridges we present are those designed specifically for cycling tourists as part of dedicated cycle routes, as well as ones that were once part of former railway lines - these are our favorites! Siekierki-Neurüdnitz Bridge - Berlin-Szczecin-Kołobrzeg Route, Germany & Poland
The Siekierki-Neurüdnitz Bridge is our favorite and the most significant bridge on the list. This remarkable cycling bridge spans the Oder River, connecting Poland and Germany. Originally built in 1892, it served as a road and railway bridge. After decades of disuse, the bridge was transformed into a cycling and pedestrian route, officially reopening in 2021. It is located between the West Pomerania and Brandenburg, near the village of Siekierki. Now it is a part of a larger network of scenic cycling routes in the West Pomerania region.

Klausmarbach Viaduct - Hessen Railway Cycle Route, Germany
A remarkable landmark on the cycling route through Hessisches Kegelspiel in Hesse is the Klausmarbach railway bridge, built in 1906. This 32-meter-high structure was once part of the Hünfeld–Wenigentaft-Mansbach railway line. After railway operations ceased, a bike route was created, transforming the abandoned structure into an impressive, historic cycling bridge. One half is dedicated to the cycling path, while the other serves as a resting area for cyclists.

Sully-sur-Loire Walduct - Loire by Bike, France
In the town of Sully-sur-Loire, at the start of the Loire Cycle Route, we come across a beautiful example of good practices in cycling tourism. This railway bridge, built in 1880, was repurposed after the railway line's closure in 2011 and reopened for cyclists in 2020. Spanning over 400 meters, the bridge rests on wide pillars designed to support a second parallel structure that was never constructed. Today, it serves not only as a crossing over the Loire but also as a fantastic viewpoint, offering unique riverside perspectives of the Loire and Sully-sur-Loire.

Pfünz Bridge - Tauber-Altmühl Radweg, Germany
One of the beautiful medieval bridges that survived over the Altmühl River in Franconia can be found just beyond Eichstätt, near the village of Pfünz. This 15th-century bridge, which was blown up by the Austrians in 1800, was rebuilt in 1822 and is one of the most valuable stone bridges in Bavaria. Now it is a part of the Tauber-Altmühl Radweg in Franconia, running through the Naturpark Altmühltal.

Ponte di Mura - Alpe-Adria Cycle Route, Italy
Among the remnants of the old railway infrastructure that remained after the relocation of train traffic to new tunnels, the most impressive are undoubtedly the old railway bridges. The largest is the Ponte di Muro over the Fella River, with four stone arches and a central iron span of 70 meters, suspended high above the valley floor. It was built in 1879, that's 144 years ago! All revitalized former railway bridges are excellent vantage points and beautiful symbols of the post-railway part of the Alpe-Adria Radweg.

Liniebrug - Waterline Route, Netherlands
The Liniebrug (also known as Fietsbrug Nigtevecht) is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge spanning the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Fort Nigtevecht and the village of Nigtevecht. It is part of the cycling route along the Dutch Waterline (Waterlinie) route. The longest span measures 100 meters, matching the canal's width at this point, and is suspended exactly 10 meters above the water. This makes it a perfect spot for observing the ships passing below.

Jauntalbrücke - Drava Cycle Route, Austria
Cycling the Drava Cycle Route, we experienced an exhilarating ride on a rather unusual cycling bridge. This path runs on a mesh platform suspended beneath the Jauntalbrücke railway bridge, constructed between 1959 and 1962. At the time, it was one of the longest and tallest railway bridges in Europe. The Jauntalbrücke stretches 430 meters, with the railway tracks running 95 meters above the water, clearly visible through the platform beneath the cyclists' wheels.

Sarca Bridge - Cycling Trentino, Italy
On the cycling routes running through the valleys of Italy's Trentino region, the bicycle paths and additional infrastructure, such as bridges designed exclusively for cyclists, leave a lasting impression. Perhaps the largest and most striking of these is the cycling bridge over the Adige River near Rovereto. Equally impressive, however, are the smaller cycling bridges in the Val Rendena valley, on the way to the famous resort of Madonna di Campiglio.

Fluthbrücke - Oder-Spree-Tour, Germany
Shortly after leaving Fürstenwalde, we entered narrow forest asphalt roads closed to cars, which first meander through dense, pleasant forests and then suddenly lead onto the Fluthbrücke - a long, wooden pedestrian-cycling bridge over the Oder-Spree Canal. With no towns nearby, this bridge serves as another example of infrastructure built by the Germans solely for local tourist traffic. When we reached the bridge, a team of professional cyclists in German national team jerseys was just coming off it.

On the Aare Route, one of Switzerland's national trails, along the section between Spiez and Bern, you’ll encounter a narrow steel pedestrian and cycling footbridge that carries bike traffic over the Kander River, one of the tributaries of the Aare. The footbridge momentarily immerses us in the thrilling atmosphere of a narrow mountain river gorge.

Poprad Bridge - Velo Dunajec, Poland
The cycling bridge over the Poprad River near the city of Nowy Sącz was one of the first built on cycling routes in Małopolska. Most of the cyclists crossing it are those traveling along the Velo Dunajec cycling route. However, not everyone realizes that the signposts here pointing to Rytro and Muszyna lead to another scenic cycling route – the Małopolska section of EuroVelo 11, which can also serve as an idea for a one-day trip accompanying a Velo Dunajec adventure.

Green Bridge - Iron Cycle Route, Poland
The Green Bridge in Jastrzębie-Zdrój was built during a period of rapid industrial and railway infrastructure development in Upper Silesia. The bridge was part of a railway line that connected local mines and industrial facilities with larger transportation hubs. After the railway line was closed, the bridge was abandoned and fell into disrepair for many years. Thanks to local government initiatives and EU funding it was revitalized and incorporated into the Żelazny Szlak Rowerowy (Iron Cycling Route).

On the EuroVelo 10/13 cycling route in the region of West Pomerania, there is a small bridge over a dried-up canal that once connected Lake Kopań with the Baltic Sea.
